REQUIREMENTS / SET-UP / ADDITIONAL INFO
TREEBASE is easy to set up and use on your computer. First of all,
please note the following system requirements:
DOS 2.1 or above
color monitor
384K RAM
hard disk drive
The program may be operated from a floppy drive, but performance is
reduced significantly with the increased time required to find and
read records. Conversely, optimum performance is achieved using a RAM
or virtual drive, which is actually ideal for many programs as long as
you remember to copy your changed data files to a physical drive
before turning off your computer.
Another hindrance to the performance of virtually any non-graphics
program is slow processor speeds. TREEBASE will work regardless of
speed or processor, but the author has found speeds lower than 10 MHz
to be unsatisfactory for screen updating in the TREEBASE view window.
(But then, he may be just damn spoiled.) Since the program's
performance efficiency is dependant on speed, the higher, the better.
The following six files, with a brief description of each, comprise
the TREEBASE package:
TREEBASE.EXE - The program itself
TREEBASE.TXT - Combined help and documentation, accessible on-line
READTHIS.INF - You're looking at it
TREEBASE.SYS - Data file to hold database set-up
TREEBASE.ITM - Data file to hold database records (items)
TREEBASE.NOT - Data file to hold notes of records
One database per DOS directory is allowed and consists of the three
data files specified above. If the three data files are not present in
the current directory, the program will create new ones indicating the
start of a new database. If all three are present, the program loads
the data automatically when the program is run. A convenient method to
maintain separate databases is to place a directory containing
TREEBASE.EXE in the DOS path. This way, all you have to do is to type
TREEBASE when in or after changing to the directory that holds the
database you wish to access. To access the on-line program info,
TREEBASE.TXT must be available in the directory in which you are
currently working.
The three data files on the distribution disk contain the data for the
sample database. These will be accessed when the program is run.
(Refer to the documentation for more information about the sample
database.) Copy all data files to your fixed disk before evaluating
the program. To start a new database, either rename/delete the three
sample data files, or preferably change to another directory and start
TREEBASE via the path as mentioned above, or copy TREEBASE.EXE to the
new directory. Also copy TREEBASE.TXT to this directory in order to
access the documentation within TREEBASE.

The following command line options may be used when starting the
program:
TREEBASE [/43] [/50]
Use the /43 switch if you have EGA or VGA and want the 43-line mode
Use the /50 switch if you have VGA and want the 50-line mode
The main advantage of a higher resolution screen mode includes the
ability to view a larger portion of the database in the view window.
Disadvantages include slower program display in the view window, and
the reduction of other program screens configured for 25-line mode to
less than their normal size.
The details of using the program can be found in the TREEBASE.TXT
file, which you may print by typing TYPE TREEBASE.TXT >LPT1 at the DOS
prompt, assuming LPT1 is the correctly attached printer port for your
system. (Printing is not entirely necessary, however, as you may view
the contents of TREEBASE.TXT within the program itself by pressing
F1.) The file READTHIS.INF may be printed in a similar manner to above
if you would like a printed copy of what you are reading now. In fact,
a printed copy will provide you with the following invoice page which
you may use if or when you decide to register. The registration fee of
$25 entitles you to utilize the software on a single computer. No
restrictions apply to the number of backup copies the user wishes to
produce.
As a final note, the author claims there to be no known way this
software can interfere or harm any data or hardware when used on a
compatable computer, and thus any claims made thereof shall be
considered null and void. This also applies to TREEBASE data
inadvertantly deleted when using the normal delete functions of the
program. (If you are registered and do in fact delete something
important by mistake, a chance exists that the information can be
undeleted if you contact the author right away.)
